AFUSA All Set for Twin Fundraiser

The alumni foundation rolls out the carpet for its biggest fundraising project to date with its first-ever charity casino on July 6th at the Marriott World Center Orlando and topping it off with a matinee musical featuring Orlando’s Winter Park Playhouse on July 8th.

The casino party kicks off the weekend-long reunion activities jointly sponsored by the UERMMMC Medical Alumni Association in America, Inc. (MAAAI) and the UERMMMC Alumni Foundation USA, Inc. (AFUSA).

Now in its 29th year, the alumni convention features a category-1 CME program on July 7th starring UERM graduates led by speakers from the jubilarian classes, the Dr. Jose Cuyegkeng Memorial Lecture this year to be given by 1987 alumna and Secretary of the Department of Health, Dr. Paulyn Ubial, the jubilarian night, and the gala celebration on July 8th honoring the jubilarians particularly the Golden Class of ’67 and the Silver Batch of 1992.The casino includes blackjack, craps, roulette, money wheel and mahjong game tables, and comes with two Las Vegas style showgirls and a veteran DJ. A buffet dinner will be served. There will be lots of dancing. There will so much valuable items to bid for at the live and silent auctions. As attendees will be playing for fun, exciting prizes are in store for the best game players.

The musical will feature very talented professional performers from the foundation’s partner playhouse which has been a distinctive part of Orlando’s cultural fare for some years.

Proceeds from this project will benefit the Dr. Wilmer Heceta Endowment Fund of the alumni foundation.

AFUSA’s Special Fundraising for 2017 (SFG’17) in charge of this project is cochaired by Drs. Ned Valen and Ernesto Suguitan, R.N. Members are: Drs. Rommel Aquino, Orson Battad, Nards Buena, Jacqueline Fabello-Gamiao, Belen Gilo, Leandro Maranan, Larry Miranda, Nena Flor Piga and Ruby Reyes. Dr. Samuel Piga is project coordinator. Special Assistance is provided by Dr. Estherbelle Heceta, honorary chair of the Dr. Wilmer Heceta Endowment Fund and her daughter Cris Heceta, a board member of the Winter Park Playhouse. Ex-Officio Chairs are Drs. Isabelita Casibang and Elmer Gilo.

Alikpala Memorial Fund

Soon after the death of Dr. Simona C. Alikpala on May 11, 2007, a fund was started for a professorial chair in Pediatrics in her honor at the UERMMMC-MAAA, Inc. The goal set for this fund was $50,000. Through the years, over $15,000 was raised from family, friends and former pediatric residents at UERMMMC. Read more.

Film Project A Success

The foundation at last year’s alumni convention in Plano, Texas successfully held a film project showing two acclaimed independent films promoted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Cinemalaya initiative. Read more.
